OpenAI's real moat is enterprise inertia, not model quality

The race isn't about who has the best model. It's about who gets embedded in the most workflows first.

Every enterprise integration creates switching cost. Every API call baked into a production system is a vote for the incumbent. OpenAI understood this before anyone — the GPT API wasn’t a product, it was a land grab.

The pattern is identical to AWS circa 2010: the product doesn’t need to be the best, it needs to be first in the budget line. Once you’re in procurement, you’re in the building. Once you’re in the building, you’re in the roadmap.

The companies betting on “better models will win” are fighting the wrong war.
